 Illinois Soccer Referee Clinics

All Referees:
(Regardless of Referee grade level)

  • Must attend a clinic each year and pass a written exam each year for their grade level.  (Referee Grades 1-7 have additional requirements they must meet each year.)
  • Must pay two fees each year (Clinic Fee & USSF Registration Fee).
  • May not arrive late or leave early for any clinic.
  • May not register for more than one Referee clinic at a time.

Clinic Fees: $35.00 (effective January 1, 2007) -- Pay at clinic!

USSF Referee Registration Fees:  See following schedule! (Referee Grades do NOT mean school grade)!

Referee Grades 1 and 2:
$60.00
Referee Grades 3 and 4:
$50.00
Referee Grades 5, 6, and 13:
$40.00
Referee Grades 7, 8, and 15:
$25.00
Referee Grade 9:
$20.00
Referee Grade 12:
$15.00

How to Pay:

  • Pay Clinic Fee at clinic. 
  • New Referees pay both clinic fee and USSF registration fee at clinic.
  • If in good standing, Recertifying Referees may send their completed USSF registration form to ISRC with appropriate USSF Referee Registration Fee by December 1st of each year, and then follow-up with their Recertification Clinic.
  • Recertifying Referees may also choose to take their completed registration form and pay both USSF Registration Fee and Clinic Fee at clinic with one check, payable to ISRC. 
  • Separate checks when paying for more than one person. 
  • Separate checks for each registration if you have multiple registrations (Referee, Assignor, Assessor, and/or Instructor).

Arrival Time and What to Bring to Clinic:      

  • Arrive 20-30 minutes prior to start time for sign-in at ALL clinics and Fitness Tests.
  • Anyone not arriving at least 15 minutes prior to start of clinic may lose their spot to walk-ins.
  • Cash or check, payable to “ISRC” for fees (we do not accept credit cards).
  • Lunch, unless otherwise stated.
  • Flags for Assistant Referee Clinics (if you have them).

Clinic Types: 
ALL referees, regardless of grade level, MUST attend a clinic each year and pass a written exam each year for their grade level (Grades 1-7 have additional requirements they must meet each year).

Referee Clinics:

*Recreational Clinic – Referee Grade 9:

  • Custom designed for individual clubs and NOT advertised on this web page. 
  • May do centers and lines for IYSA affiliated Recreational games and may do lines up to U-14 for USSF affiliated games.
  • If you are a Referee Grade 9 or wish to become a Grade 9, check with your local club for a clinic.

*Assistant Referee – Referee Grade 12:  (Bring flags if you have them)

  • May only serve as linesmen for USSF affiliated games.
  • For new and recertifying Assistant Referees – NOT for Referee Grade 8’s.

*Any Recreational Referee or Assistant Referee wishing to become an Entry Level Grade 8 Referee must take the 2-day Entry Level Clinic.

Entry Only – Referee Grade 8:  

  • For anyone wishing to become a USSF Referee and do both centers and lines on all USSF affiliated youth and amateur adult games.
  • For New Referees Only.
  • Requires 2 days of class time the first year.
  • Must attend a 1-day Recertification Clinic each year thereafter.
  • Any Recertifying Referee signing up for this clinic must attend both days to receive credit for the clinic.

Recertification Only – Referee Grades 7, 8, 13, and 15:

  • 1 day Recertification Only – Referee Grades 5, 6, 9, and 12 may NOT attend!
  • Recertifying Referees should review their Laws of the Game book prior to their clinic, especially the 8 Starts and Restarts.

Entry/Recertification – Referee Grades 7, 8, 13, and 15:

  • Combined Entry and Recertification clinic. 
  • Entries (new referees) MUST attend both days.  Recerts attend only 2nd day.

Intermediate – Referee Grades 5, 6, 7, and some 8’s:

  • Advanced clinic for higher level referees or experienced Grade 8 referees.
  • Restrictions for Grade 8’s will be listed on the specific clinic site.

Indoor:

  • Certified to do only Indoor games – MUST have at least a Grade 8 referee certification.

Other Clinics:

  • Fitness Test:  Required each year for Referee Grades 5, 6, and 7 OR any Grade 8 wishing to upgrade.
  • Assessor Clinic:  Certified to evaluate other referees.  Requirements listed on site.
  • Assignor Clinic:  Certified to assign referees for games.  MUST be 21 years old.
  • Instructor Clinic:  Certified to instruct training clinics.
