MESSAGE: I have been a soccer parent for a long time. I was recently at the tournaments and I was totally shocked at behavior of parents. People were saying things about these children on the field playing their hearts out. Telling their players to take kids out and clapping when a player leaves the field. I would never think of saying anything bad about another persons child. In the grand scheme of things its only a childs game of soccer and not the end of the world. People need to show respect for each others teams. What are we showing these kids?

If we want youth sports parents to display sportsmanship maybe we should set and example all around including professional sports.

At the Crew game last night the fans booed the opposing team when they game out onto the field, and they booed and threw things at the officials after the game. They were poor sports throughout.
It was sad to me that the announcer even asks for people to be good sports before the game begins.

I think it is great to have the hooligan fans who are so excited, but I don’t think they should chant A..hole in their songs etc. It is a family event and there are many children attending who can hear them.

The rude parents are showing the kids that there is something missing in their lives and they are trying to live vicariously through their children and at the same time are probably making sports not a very enjoyable experience for their kids entire team as well as the kids they play. It has been going on as long as there has been childrens sports, although it seems to be getting worse as sports become more and more organized and business-like. And it will continue---unless people like you address the issue directly with the parents, or discuss it with the coach and ask him/her to address it. Even then, odds are there will still be parents that don't recognize any harm it what they are doing.

A very bad example. It is truly sad that each season we have to have a few of these posts.
