Excellent article. However, is there a way we could get something out for the players? Our team has played another team twice now, and a few of the girls (when our girls have made a legal challenge or are battling well) have been cussed at and last night, one of their players cussed and hit our player after our player made a legal tackle.

Luckily, last night, the ref caught it and issued a yellow card.

This team is notorious for cussing and it's beginning to get out of hand.

I'm glad the ref did something; however, "using offensive, insulting or obusive language and/or gestures" is a send-off (red card) offense according to law 12. Also refs are told that striking or attempting to strike should be considered as violent conduct which is also a send-off offense (law 12). Unless the ref saw things differently than you did and interpreted it as simply unsporting behavior (caution/yellow card, law 12) he or she probably didn't do enough to deter this type of behavior in the future.

Interesting topic. I am a referee and have not experienced this as of yet during any match I've worked, but I do have something to add.

In a recent match the intrusion into the game by the spectators was so blatant that the players were following directions from this group. Not how to play, but rather when I stopped play for subs or other needs, this group would loudly shout at the player to make the throw or take the kick. This happened time and again and even to the extent that I had to bring everyone back to the original restart 3-or-4 times. This even even happened once while I had stopped play with the ball out of play and was helping a player off who had begun to complain about a headache after a series of head balls he had played.

There is an issue here; probably with many tangents as well. And it does need to be addressed. But the initial step for addressing any incident of any nature is for the event to be reported, in writing, to the MOSSL league office. They do follow-up on reports; especially in instances where the team or player has or is being reported more than once. And they do a very thorough job but you may not know it unless you are involved. Anyone may file a report and obviously any report by someone involved or with first hand information such as a witness is given greater regard. The process does work and there is no detriment for making a report. Of this I speak from first hand knowledge.

Have a little trust in those who operate MOSSL. I think you would be surprised!

Jim this message was posted by Bolski a Response to New Rules for Soccer Parents BY EDWARD WONG from the N.Y. Times - "SIDELINE RAGE" Posted By: ameil43065 On 9/13/2009 8:31:05 AM. I am sure you can tell who he is by looking up his id. Maybe he is afraid his club will get angry with him for bringing up this issue with Mossl. But if no one ever reports incidences like these... they this type of behavior will continue!

I hope Bolski will call you Jim when he sees your message.

Jim, I don't know. It was a posted message on m other posting message related to side line rage. I just posted it because its ridiculous. I am so disgusted with how games are getting so out of hand as of late! Parents are yellowing rude things to kids playing on the opposing team. Coaches are screem rude things to the refs.... and now the first someone experienced kids hitting and cussing on the field! Do you go randomly to games/tournaments to view behaviors of certain clubs? I don't know how some kids can get a positive experience from soccer when exposed to these types of behaviors?

I am confused. Where was this reported?

Yes, MOSSL does look into these sort of things but not based upon an snonymous Discussion Board posting that contains no specific information.
