West Allis (June 6,
2005) – Seven teams claimed
STATE CHAMPION titles yesterday, and have earned
a trip to Sioux Falls, SD to represent their
club and the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association
at the Region II tournament later this month.
Match Day 5 of the spring portion of the 2005
Wisconsin State Cup, held all of the drama,
suspense, thrills and agonies that come with
championships. Claiming the 2 nd spring title,
in the first game of the day were FC Milwaukee
U13 boys who defeated Mequon SC 2-0. They were
quickly followed by the Madison 56ers U13 girls
who surpassed FC Milwaukee 2-0. The Madison
56ers victory was the first insurance win against
an FC Milwaukee championship sweep.
Yahara Blue U14 boys followed suit, reaffirming that Madison area teams can and
will compete with Milwaukee area teams and soundly defeated FC Milwaukee 4-0
in the third title match of the day. A 2-0 score line was posted by FC Milwaukee
over SC Waukesha Freedom in the U14 girls final. FC Milwaukee claimed another
title in the U15 boys match beating Paper Valley Youth Soccer Club – Neenah
4-0. The U16 boys' final had an all Madison flavor, featuring the Madison 56ers
taking Yahara Middleton 2-1 in overtime with a golden goal. The victory was somewhat
somber due to Mohamed Elfarra (Yahara-Middleton), who was wheeled off the field
in the early minutes of overtime, after suffering a compound leg break. “The
prayers of the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association and the members of both teams
go out to Mohamed Elfarra,” said Kelly Ross, Executive Director for WI
Youth Soccer during the post game awards presentation. “We wish Mohamed
a safe and speeding recovery, “Ross finished.
The U17 boys' game between Yahara United and Brookfield Red was all that it was
billed to be, providing attacking soccer, skilled defensive play and plenty of
adrenaline throughout. Surprisingly, Yahara scored in the 1 st minute of play
from the kick-off and held the lead up until approximately the 80 th minute when
Brookfield found a seam in the Yahara defense to draw level. A tense moment followed
thereafter, whilst the crowd held its breath as all in attendance observed a
brief discussion between the Referee and the Assistant referee. The referee declared
the goal valid and the match proceeded into overtime where Brookfield again,
found another seam in the Yahara defense and buried the game winning golden goal.
Steve Adlard, Brookfield 's coach eloquently stated during the post game awards
presentation, “There are no losers in a game like this. There's only another
thing for one team.” Adlard stated, “This was a very good game. You
(Yahara) are a very, very good team. This was one of the best U17 games Wisconsin
has seen in several years.”
With the seven titles awarded yesterday,
only 1 remains up for grabs. The U19 boys division features
the Elm Grove Villagers and FC Milwaukee next week in Elm
Grove.
